because of its high levels of <strong>OMEGA 3 ACIDS.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOTE: I&#8217;ll leave the topic of heavy metals\u2014which some of you may have as a counterargument\u2014for another day \ud83d\ude09.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-inflammatory properties of this food group are beyond doubt. Their role in <strong>cardiovascular and brain health<\/strong>, their <strong>protective function against Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/strong> and other degenerative diseases of the nervous system&#8230; all of them are being widely studied by the scientific community.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to our lungs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7706605\">some studies<\/a> indicate that omega-3 fatty acids can <strong>promote lung circulation and be beneficial for various lung conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21889886\">study<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> conducted at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona, even found that<strong> consumption of higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids was associated with lower inflammation markers in those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>What fish am I referring to? The small and medium sized ones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mackerel, sardines, anchovies, herrings, frigate tuna, wild salmon&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Tuna and swordfish officially belong to this category; however, I do not include them here because they are too big and, as a consequence, accumulate higher loads of heavy metals.<\/p>\n<p>For algae lovers: Spirulina, chlorella\u2026 they are also great sources of omega-3 \ud83d\ude0a.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Garlic<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_7173\" style=\"width: 658px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7173\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7173 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image6.jpeg\" alt=\"Garlic\" width=\"648\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image6.jpeg 648w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image6-300x159.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image6-200x106.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image6-500x265.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Mike Kenneally on Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Garlic and its <strong>antimicrobial properties<\/strong> have been well known for millennia.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, it is a <strong>powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant<\/strong>, not only for the lungs but in general for our entire immune system. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4103721\/\">This article<\/a> shows some of its therapeutic properties.<\/p>\n<p>This kitchen staple does much more than enhancing the taste of our dishes.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is recommended to <strong>consume them raw in order to obtain the therapeutic benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In salads<\/li>\n<li>Cut in 2-3 chunks and <em>eaten directly<\/em>. Here is an article from the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21965273\">&#8220;Carcinogenesis<\/a><strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong> in case you\u2019d like to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>Green tea also contains <strong>Theophylline<\/strong>, a powerful bronchodilator (i.e., it <strong>expands the bronchi<\/strong>) that is used in medicine to treat asthma symptoms, bronchitis, emphysema, and other respiratory problems since it alleviates breathing difficulties (but it doesn\u2019t cure them).<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29378037\">studies<\/a> indicate that regular consumption of green tea may be related to a <strong>lower risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)<\/strong>, a group of lung diseases that can cause shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, excess mucus, etc.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Ginger<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_7180\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7180\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7180 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image8.jpeg\" alt=\"Ginger\" width=\"587\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image8.jpeg 587w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image8-300x270.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image8-200x180.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/stedtnitz.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image8-500x450.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are rivers of ink written about ginger these days, so I&#8217;m not going to elaborate here. This spice, coming from India and of an intense yellow color that threatens not to leave your clothes nor your fingertips, is a powerful ally on our plate due to its <strong>anti-inflammatory properties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Curcumin<\/strong> is the active component of this spice, and the one that gives it both its intense color and its effects on health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27888157\">Preliminary research<\/a> suggests that turmeric&#8217;s anti-inflammatory properties may help in the treatment of various respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, acute respiratory distress syndrome, lung injury, and pulmonary fibrosis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: We hardly absorb curcumin in our intestines; most of it is excreted in the stools. In order to increase the bioavailability in our body, <strong>it is recommended to take it together with a pinch of black pepper. <\/strong>This has an active component called <em>piperine<\/em> that helps &#8220;transport&#8221; turmeric through the intestinal walls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are these the only foods that help support our lungs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Certainly not.<\/p>\n<p>However, I decided to discuss these because <strong>we can easily find them these days<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is that all that is needed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>It is equally important that we <strong>remove from our plates any foods <\/strong>that interfere with lung health.<\/p>\n<p>Here you have a very short list (I will talk about these foods in another post):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Highly processed foods<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Unhealthy fats and refined vegetable oils<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fried foods<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Processed meats (sausages, meatballs, cold cuts&#8230;)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sweetened drinks and carbonated drinks<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Added sugars<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is widely accepted that these types of food promote inflammation by increasing the production of harmful free radicals (against which our immune system has to fight).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, they significantly contribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourlifeonaplate.com\/blog-posts\/when-we-eat-our-stress\">perpetuation of stress and anxiety<\/a>, something that, unfortunately, is more present than ever these days. I talked about that in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourlifeonaplate.com\/blog-posts\/when-we-eat-our-stress\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, and as obvious as it may seem, we must remember that <strong>our plate is only one piece of the puzzle<\/strong> when it comes to lung health; important, yes, but a piece within a more complete picture. <strong>Exercise, sleep and healthy habits<\/strong> make up some of the other pieces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are these foods going to prevent the spread?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>No, of course not. Nor cure us <\/strong>in case the virus gets into our bodies. This is not about &#8220;miracle foods.&#8221; Such things do not exist. Do not let anyone fool you with \u201c<em>miraculous quick fixes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what they certainly can do is <strong>provide your body with the nutrients it requires<\/strong> to do what it does best<strong>: <em>take care of itself<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Let&#8217;s give to our bodies the \u2018edible tools\u2019 it needs to do its work as wisely as it&#8217;s been doing it since we were born.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any questions about these foods?<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t hesitate to write them in the comments.
